Applications in Neurodevelopment: MNRI® Training-Practicum Series for Parents: Support for Auditory Reception and Perception for Children and Adults with Neurodevelopmental Challenges.
The auditory system works with both primary motor patterns and reflexes. Facilitation of the auditory system in children or adults with auditory processing disorder and challenges requires special knowledge of how to correctly work with their dysfunctional and pathological reflex patterns that affect functions of hearing and listening, and auditory perception.
This lecture-practicum specifically addresses the Stapedial Reflex, which functions to protect the inner ear and the brain from the overstimulation of “loud” and “unexpected” external sounds and self-generated vocalizations.
An improper display of a hyper-active / hypo-active response of this reflex can indicate its neurophysiological immaturity, which can affect auditory reception, processing, and comprehension. Poor development and maturation or the delay of these reflexes can negatively affect the formation of auditory skills, including speech, reading, and writing.
